Last night I was invited to an amazing reading and book signing at Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The event was amazing and featured WBLS/WLIB radio Ann Tripp interviewing mega music and marketing exec, Jacqueline Rhinehart on her new book "My Organic Soul." I'm not Oprah but I am telling you this is a book to get. A wonderful holiday gift. If you get a chance to see Ms. Rhinehart do a reading don't miss it. Ms. Ann Tripp (below)

The Reunion Party was Amazing

Tribute to One of the Good Guys

James and I were sadden to hear about the passing of former Councilman Phil Reed tonight. We go way back to our Black Pride NYC, Inc. days where he helped us in so many ways. Phil made it a point to attend many of our events because he believed in what we were attempting to do for the community. He was a wonderful man that lived with HIV with dignity. Here is the thing. He got out of his sick bed to go and VOTE. Two days later he died. God Bless You Phil. Rest in Peace. Read more about his amazing life.

Thursday continues with the hit the afterwork party "After Effects" at The Ritz at 46th St. & 9th Ave. Hosted by Jonathan and Earl. Always a good time for the mature males.

This Thursday is the debut of Candy Shop. The music will be a twist of Pop, R&B, Hip Hop and traditional Latin music provided by Dj Unknown, Yamil and guest djs. Welcome Candy Shop a great place to visit after The Ritz.

Ladies the hot Lovergirl party continues this Saturday at Club Cache. We also have to say that Kate and the ladies have been a supporter over the years of James Saunders and Laurence Pinckney events. It began when we relaunched Black Pride NYC in 2001 and through our 2005 event. As a promoter partner each email that has gone out for Lovergirl has posted the Nubian Dreams banner. This is the first time we have had time to breathe in months. James Saunders and I thought that after all the preparations and promotions surrounding the Nubian Dreams Cruise and Lounge we needed to take a breather. We will not be hosting a Nubian Dreams Lounge in May but we do have a special event that we are planning for invited guests on May 21. More details to follow. If you will be in NYC on Wed. May 21 email us for a invitation for this very special event.

On next and final Nubian Dreams Lounge event will be again at Taj Lounge on Pride Sunday, June 29, 2008 from 6pm-11pm which will be co-presented with HBO. This is an event that you don't want to miss.

Sweet Success of "In the House"

Thanks to all that came out to Sunday's "In the House" event. We had a wonderful time getting to know each other and enjoying the entertainment and music of Fred Pierce. In the house where professionals from all walks of life including a chemist, publicist, a plumbers, a few teaches, DJ's Andre Collins, Suede and others. Legends; Ron Brown of Evidence Dance Company, Kevin Anthony of Black 2 Broadway, Henry Carter of Spirit Cruise and film director Aleada Minton of InnerRising Productions, Inc. were also in the House.

The entertainers included: Lady Jasmin - the amazing drag performer who did a very special rendition of Tyler Perry's Media, DANI performed her new house track and Kenton Rogers brought his soulful sound to the lounge. Here is part two of the "In the House" event recap.

Taj Lounge has been totally renovated and it looks magnificant. The In the House event also included the free V2 Vodka special shots early in the evening, the 2-4-1 drinks from 7pm-8pm and the HBO raffle where we raffled off the complete set of season 3 and season 4.

Spring Party Season in Full Effect

Last night over a thousand black men partied at the "Men are from Mars" party at Mars 2112. The promoters of this event brought the party to a height multiple times during the evening. It was also great to see all the fellow promoters out to promote their upcoming parties and events. We saw Daryl Wilson who was pushing his upcoming party in Philly next week and his Chocolate City Fest in DC, Bleu Magazine was out promoting their magazine, Alberto wants brothers and sisters to come out tomorrow to the grand opening of the hottest latin party in the city, Escandalo Nights, Fred Pierce celebrates his birthday tomorrow also at HK Lounge at 406 W. 39th St. with three top DJ's, DJ Calvin Smith was promoting his new party in Brooklyn "Ascension" at the Chocolate Bar, Tony Shelton was out offering his annual "Ride to Pride" for DC Pride. Of course the Nubian Dreams team was out telling people to act now and grab the last 50 cabins for the Nubian Dreams Cruise. Don't forget ladies tonight is the Lovergirl Saturday party.

Finally it looks like competition has turned to cooperation. We want to send a special thanks to other promoters who have always welcomed promoters to promote at their events. Jonathan and Earl of Thursday's afterwork networking smash at the Ritz have always been there for us, our oldest friend Langston Lounge in Brooklyn, Kate at Lovergirl, Wayne at the Hanger, the Chi Chiz crew, Joe Mode from In the Mix, Alberto & Fernando of Escandalo Nights and Cornel in London, UK and so many others. Clik Goes Out With A Bang.

We would ask all of our Nubian Dreams family to go out and buy the final Clik Magazine. After 10 years Clik as decided to call it quits on the newsstands and in print. As we have said so many times before it is up to us to support us. Clik has been a supporter of so many African American organizations over the years and as we say goodbye to yet another special publication by us and for us it is a heavy reminder that we must continue to support each other whenever we can.

Dwight and staff will be fine because they still have the number #1 African American LGBT circuit party in the US with Sizzle Miami and Sizzle Her. We will be discussing the disappearance of people of color magazines in our Media Matters/Producers Forum during the Nubian Dreams Cruise. We hope you join us.

A message from Clik publisher Dwight Powell

Going out with a bang, on my terms and on my time. From our modest beginning in Houston, Texas in 1998, Clikque, now Clik has evolved into America’s most recognized and respected publication in the Black gay community. As you might imagine, this feat has not come easy. However, in spite of the many challenges over the years, I can truly say that I would travel the same road again. From the bottom of my heart, without an ounce of regret, I would like to express mysincere gratitude for 10 years of love, support and Encouragement.Publishing this magazine has been a dream come true; to honor, recognize, uplift and highlight the Black Gay Experience in America.

This magazine came OUT around a time when Black Gay men were ashamed, in hiding, and greatly underrepresented. After ten years, all of that have changed. Changed in part to the diligence, tenacity, and drive of our magazine as we aspired to be the best, command respect, and garner appreciation from the audience we serves and beyond. Today our community is vibrant, out, and proud. As with everything, all good things must eventually come to an end.Yes, ClikMagazine had reached the end of the road that it’s been traveling since May of 1998. I am elated to say that our job here is done. We’ve inspired, motivated, informed, educated, and entertained, which from day one, have been my objectives. To that end, I’ve succeeded. This is especially evident with the dawn of gay bloggers and e-zines that are taking our experience to another stratosphere, and mush faster. To fast for print magazines to keep-up with, as technology has elevated publishing to everyone simply with the touch of a mouse.

I am excited and saddened all at the same time. Sad that this issues closes this chapter of my life, but however, excited of the future and possibilities that awaits me. As I say farewell to you, my good friends, I must first express my gratitude to the many people that have been instrumental in not only the success, by longevity of this publications. From my past love Nestor Zapata to my love of today Luis Medrano. Who I owe my heart for the years of support and unwavering dedications. Special thanks to my best friend Rod Martin who has had my back thru the many ups and downs. Thanks to Lewis Nicholson, Scott Bogan, Derrick Goodley, James Martin, Charles Ingram, Derrick Miles, Grover Fortenbarry, Jerry Boles, and especially to the late Don Sneed whose support kept us afloat for many years. Escandalo Night Explodes

Congratulations to our friends at Escandalo Nights. Their move to the new location in upper Manhattan at El Morocco was a blast. It seemed like over one thousand people packed the place with a mix of Dominican, Black, straight and gay folks for a evening to be remembered. The promoters of Nubian Dreams have been friends of Alberto and Fernando for many years starting back with Dominican Island Heat I, II and Bahian Heat. We support each other the way it should be done. Stay tuned for the next Escandalo Nights party next month. A word to the wise, go early. This crowd comes early and stays late. Upcoming Events

Events are hard to do. Promoters put up so much money to secure venues, advertisments, promotion and talent. Many people don't understand how much work goes into the creation and execution of these parties and events. Promoters have to wait to see if the promotion was effective at the day of the event. Cruises like the Nubian Dreams Cruise are a little different in that cruise ships want their money months in advance as do hotels. It would be great if people would make a early commitment to these events so that promoters could focus on making the event bigger and better everytime.

This is a long post but we feel an important one. On Tuesday is the important election in several key states for President. If you have contacts or family in any of those states please hopefully encourage them to vote. Election info here. Thank you.

Thanks to everyone that has come out to the Nubian Dreams Lounge series in New York City and those who partied with us at the Nubian Dreams Cruise presents "Return to Paradise" at the Winter Explosion.

We have five goals in mind for the Nubian Dreams concept. We want to bring together mature members of the same gender loving community and their friends to network, enjoy talented entertainers, artists, party and introduce guests to the Nubian Dreams Cruise Experience. If you like the lounge you will love the cruise. Good people, Good Food, Big Fun, Relaxation and God's Beauty. Cruising is such a wonderful experience and thanks to fellow promoters like Ebony Pyramid, Songmaster, Bess Knowing and others we will bring our 30 years of producing events to the sea. Each day will be different with new events and surprises. Sound good? Reserve Now.

Making It Happen
How we do we do it? Call us crazy but most of the businesses that launch such lofty events either have trust funds or sponsors to foot the initial bill. We have neither. Just commitment from our small team, sponsors and friends. These megaships demand a financial commitment upfront as do all the venues, designers, talent, printers and foot soldiers. Unless you rent the entire ship, producers continue to have to manage cabin inventory. When the price of the ship cabins go up we have to pass it on to the guests. It is vital that guests sign up early in order to maximize our negotiation position with the cruise ship to provide the best experience for our guests.

The corporate sponsors, with few exceptions do not take our demographic seriously. Please acknowledge those that do. Rarely will you find events like black prides, winter explosion (15 years) or Miami Sizzle to name a few with any big name sponsors. Why? Perhaps because we don't demand it. Perhaps promoters can't guarantee what the sponsor needs. Attention and sell through is what they want. This has to change because we (the community) deserve it. We spend money worldwide and are as a rule loyal to their products.

Now it is harder than ever to get any support. We are very much appreciative all of our sponsors, affiliates, promoter partners who have assisted us in getting the word out. That is a big thing because today many companies have disbanded their African American marketing departments and the African American LGBT community never has gotten the corporate support it deserves. Why? In the words of one marketing executive who could not participate confided that "the company already has them (meaning us).” Many companies are choosing to focus on the every growing Latino market." Wow? Right?

After producing parties and events for over 30 years, the producers of Nubian Dreams continue to prove themselves over and over again to potential guests, sponsors, venues, artists and others. Putting on events like the Nubian Dreams Cruise, The White Party Moonlight Cruise, Dominican Island Heat, Bahian Heat and other African American events is always a challenge. Without corporate sponsorship to back such commitment, it is from the immediate assistance of graphic & web designers, photographers, media sponsors, promoter partners and people like you that make these events possible.

Obama's message of YES WE CAN is important for all of us to embrace. We are powerful people and spreading the word and communicating with producers and sponsors goes a long way. During the Nubian Dreams Cruise and Lounge events we have a wonderful opportunity to get together and share experiences. The parties, forums, films, entertainment and workshops offer the opportunity to explore other places.

What we ask you to do to help us make this a very special adventure is act now by making a reservation. We have planned for 400 people and although we are half way there we need everyone to get on board before the price increases. Once we have sold out our allotment we can put ALL our focus to the Sun Pass programming. Watch our promo video here.

Regina Shavers was an advocate. She had a long history of community involvement as co-chair of District Council 37 she promoted workers’ rights and served on the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Lesbian and Gay Rights Advisory Board. She played an active role in other organizations as well including; Campaign for and Inclusive Family Policy, Pride At Work, former Assistant Director of the NYC Department of Health’s HIV Training Institute and the New York Association on HIV Over Fifty (NYAHOF). In 1995, Regina co-founded and was the Executive Director of GRIOT Circle to combat the lack of community that she had observed amongst LGBT Elders, particularly those of color. Today's Black History Month tribute to

ROD PATRICK RISBROOK (aka "BIG ROD") is a CADD [Computer-Aided Drafting and Design] professional who designs/drafts architectural and engineering drawings by day and spends the rest of his other time as a socio-political activist for the Black [same gender loving] community. As part of his socio-political agenda, ROD lent his humanitarian energies for 3+ years to the Black Men's Xchange-New York [BMX-NY] which is a cultural affirmation and leadership empowerment collective for same gender loving men of African descent.

He served in the capacity of a Developmental Committee member which is the leadership engine of BMX-NY.Creatively, ROD captures still moments in time as a photographer, doing graphic design work, and is a producer at Brooklyn Cable Access Television [BCAT] working on a select number of progressive television shows. ROD also relentlessly networks with other brothers and sisters via the Internet and at multiple venues sharing positive information for dissemination.

His future goals include someday self-publishing some fictional novels that reflect Africentric people in the mystery, drama and science-fiction genres. ROD is currently transitioning from CADD to filmmaker by pursuing a path as a cinematographer/filmmaker in order to bring to life what he calls "our stories" that need to be told. It has been a very busy two weeks. The second Nubian Dreams Lounge was a success. Special thanks to all the ladies that came out and the fellas that also showed through. Tammy and Butta threwdown and DJ Poison Ivy turned it. We sold quite of few cabins for the cruise and tickets to the upcoming Nubian Dreams "Return to Paradise" event at Winter Explosion. Thank you.

The real estate business is busy in NYC even though the news is frighting, all you want to do is runaway. James and I did just that last week...well almost. We went on a three day prep tour of San Juan and St. Thomas in preparation for the upcoming Nubian Dreams Cruise and the "Sun Pass" events. If you get the Nubian Dreams newsletter you might already know some of this information. Here is what we are considering as a part of the "Sun Pass." Details of the package will be announced next week. Stay tuned to the website for more.

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Terrence Howard will make his stage debut in Debbie Allen's Broadway revival of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," the first production led by an all-black cast to be authorized by playwright Tennessee Williams' estate.
Tony-winning trio James Earl Jones, Phylicia Rashad and "Dreamgirls" actress Anika Noni Rose also star in the latest version of Williams' Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern drama, which is set to open March 6 at New York's Broadhurst Theatre.
Howard will play the haunted, alcoholic Brick, a former football player who rebuffs the advances of his wife, Maggie (Rose), and faces a tortured relationship with his domineering father, Big Daddy (Jones). Rashad plays Big Mama. The other two main roles in the dysfunctional family still are being cast.
Preview performances begin February 12.

Nubian Dreams Lounge Sails Off

They always say that the first one is the hardest. Well this was no exception. The weather forecast for the weekend was dire. Snow, rain, and hail. That's the way the news played it up, like it was going to be the blizzard of the year. Well, thank God over 150 special people threw caution to the wind and braved the elements to not only attend the launch of the Nubian Dreams Lounge but also to celebrate the 50th birthday of the Nubian Dreams co-founder, James Saunders.

The evening began with music/video wall showing images of the Carnival Miracle Ship as well as events that James and Laurence have produced over the years. It showed the audience what they could expect onboard the upcoming Nubian Dreams Cruise, which will depart New York City on October 8-16, 2008. It was followed by entertainment hosted by ButtaFlySoul, an amazing talent. Next up followed a full show by the legendary comedienne, Tammy Peay. Although Butta and Tammy met for the first time that night they performed magic together. So much so that they are putting together a special routine for the next Nubian Dreams lounge which is scheduled for Jan. 27, 2008, at the Taj Lounge - 48 W. 21st Street in NYC. More about that later.

The music pumped, first by the secret sounds of DJ Calvin Smith, who in my opinion is one of the most under-rated DJ's in NYC. He was followed by DJ Poison Ivy, who kicked too. She will be back next month as our special guest DJ for the evening. Bringing an end to the 5pm - 10pm party was the legendary DJ Fred Pierce, the longtime partner and friend of James.

Wow...I could write for hours, but I can't right now. In the next few days we will be bring you pictures and videos of the event. Mark your calendars for the next Nubian Dreams Lounge on Sunday, January 27.

Special thanks go out to so many people, but I will just name a few here. To my girl Alexis, our promoter partner, who came out, even though she had so many other personal obligations that she sacrificed to be there. My boy, Greg, who walked in the freezing cold to take care of an emergency for us. Our traveling partner, Jerry T., who picked up some slack and give out the Nubian Dreams promotional material. The staff of Taj Lounge, who welcomed us with open arms. I have worked many venues all over the world and never have I been treated better...not even at Caesars Palace. Next Magazine, for sending their photographer to document this special evening. The event would not have been a success without the audience showing up with a great attitude, wearing the name tags and being open to networking. The women came out in force, too. They especially appreciated the special "Go Magazine" lounge, located on the mezzanine of this wonderful space.

We had long ago decided that we wanted to make the opening event something special and to be free to guests, however we also thought it would be great to offer an opportunity for our guests to give to a worthy organization in need. On Friday evening before the event we thought about MCCNY Homeless Shelter. They do wonderful work housing the homeless teens who have nowhere else to go. We got in touch with the Executive Director. Within one hour they graciously accepted our offer of support and committed to send two volunteers down to collect donations. That night our guests gave generously to the tune of $586.00!!!!!.

As a token of appreciation with the help of two wonderful people, photographer Ripp Bowman, who donated two lovely photo posters from his collection, and the skillful massage art of Mkuno, who donated a 15-minute massage to those who donated $15.00 of more. Thanks guys for caring.Look forward to our upcoming posts with pictures and more commentary.

The Day is Upon Us

The night we have been waiting for is here. Tomorrow as you know is the launch party for the monthly Nubian Dreams Lounge at Taj 48 W. 21st. Street in New York City. Here are the new developments since my last post.

We are proud to support the MCCNY Homeless Youth Services organization and Sylvia's Place for our first Nubian Dreams event. This group who works with MCC Church to provide much needed shelter for homeless gay and lesbian youth in NYC. These are the kids that no one seems to want. Sylvia's place takes them in. Since tomorrow event is free we will be suggesting a $5.00 donation be given to this worthy organization. Representives will be on hand to gratefully receive it. Wonderful World of Entertainment in NYC

Last week we rushed to see the Color Purple in NYC with Fantasia. When we got to the theater we were met by a huge line. Fantasia had called in sick and half of the sold out house was cancelling. Let me tell you, I am so glad we stayed because the cast was on FIRE. Headed by the talented Montego Glover as Ms. Celie (role of Fantasia) the show took on a life of it's own. Ms. Glover is not only a great singer but an excellent actress as well. We were very impressed and glad we stayed. The music conducted by Ms. Linda Twine was on point and all the performances were spectacular. Sometimes it is great to see a show with understudies because that is their time to shine. I will return to see Fantasia before she leaves in early January. Next time a star cancels in a show on Broadway give the understudy a shot. By the way, if you are coming to the Nubian Dreams Cruise from out of town perhaps you want to make time to see this wonderful show. Chaka Khan is up next.

Now let's go to the movies. Last Friday we had the pleasure of screening a very special movie called Dirty Laundry which was written, directed and produced by Maurice Jamal. It was exceptional. It says the things that many feel. The complexity of the characters and family relationships expload on the screen. Not often have I seen such sensitivity woven so perfectly with comedy & drama. Hats off to the production team and actors. Each one of them performed exceptionally. Go see it the first week it is out in your area. You won't be disappointed. Oh one more thing. The big opening previews in NYC and LA shows what power we have when we work together. My hope is that if this venture is successful which I think it will be that the producers and promoter team will use there power to promote others as others have promoted them. This is a golden time for James where the wisdom of life comes together. With 30 years of experience developing parties, trips and events for same gender loving people he continues to seek new opportunities. A testament of his contribution can be seen from the thousands of people who have supported him from the barbershop parties to Black Pride to the White Party Moonlight Cruise and now with his new partnership - the Nubian Dreams Cruise & Lounge.

It is with great pride that James & Laurence welcome you to the Nubian Dreams Lounge. Each month will will produce a different kind of experience. The elements of the lounge are entertainment, networking, music, spoken word, comedy, charity and a overall good time. Bring your business cards and a great attitude. It is about more than a party it is a celebration of the life, history and talent of our same gender loving community. It won't be for everyone but all are welcome to the dream.

Several of James talented friends will be on hand to salute James and they are legends. FACES NY Inc. and Bleu Magazine in collaboration with the High School of Graphic Communications Arts were honored to present the award of excellence to high school senior Carlos Taveras for his design for the 1st Annual World AIDS Day Poster Contest.

With “Keep The Promise” the message is to remind local and national government officials of the commitment to provide funding that will help stem the growing waves of new HIV infections and provide QUALITY health care for those already infected.

Students were asked to create a poster that would relay the message to our society, our government and ourselves. The research and images put into this project encourages all participants to communicate with each other, discuss the issues and provide opportunities to for decision when it comes to HIV/AIDS. “My first concept was children in Rwanda, Africa affected by HIV but my teacher advised me to broaden my scope, HIV/AIDS is a World problem” said Carlos. Young people in the United States are at persistent risk for HIV infection. This risk is especially notable for youth of minority races and ethnicities. Continual HIV prevention outreach and education efforts, including programs on abstinence and on delaying the initiation of sex, are required as new generations replace the generations that benefited from earlier prevention strategies.
